Things have changed since our last baby was born in 2009.  Her infant seat has expired (seats expire six years after the date of manufacture); and guidelines have changed.

The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends that toddlers are more than five times safer riding rear-facing in a car seat. They should stay rear facing until two years of age.
